Jacen Braid is a G-Mutant who serves as the protagonist in IDW Publishing's 2025 ongoing comic series Godzilla.
Personality
Jacen displays an overconfident and cocky attitude, sometimes boasting about his achievements in battling other kaiju. Despite this, he shows a remarkably level-headed demeanor when engaging in combat, showcasing keen analytical skills in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents. That being said, he does display a short temper whenever he or others are mocked or mistreated. Under all his bravado, though, Jacen is a compassionate individual who shows concern for others' safety before his own, and is still racked with immense grief over the death of his parents, coping with the loss through morbid humor and battling monsters.

Jacen was first seen in a fist fight with another student at Gravesend Charter Academy in New York City when Godzilla made landfall on the city's shores and began laying waste to the area. Upon finally noticing the behemoth looming over him, Jacen pushed the other student out of the way before Godzilla unleashed his atomic breath. To Godzilla's surprise and fear, Jacen leapt out of the smoldering crater seemingly unharmed and landed an energized punch to the kaiju's foot, though Godzilla quickly incapacitates the human with a tail swipe. G-Force had caught the sequence of events on camera, and some time later recruited Jacen after discovering he was the strongest G-Mutant they had ever seen. Jacen is lead to his living quarters by Nuki which he will share with science officer Marco Petithomme. The Marco offers Jacen a tour of the facility's lab, but the teenager turns down the offer for now as he is called on for combat training. In a game of kemari proposed by Dr. Rumi Chiba, Jacen faces off against his fellow officers to assess his abilities and skills. He manages to evade Jet Jaguar and Commander Riviera attacks, taunting them about their age. He then faces off against Nuki, dodging her laser barrage and pauses for a quick flirt. He is then interrupted by Incense who goes on to mock the teen for his crush on Nuki, infuriating Jacen into punching the pyrotechnician across the room. After being scolded by Riviera for recklessly using his powers against fellow Americans, Jacen joins the rest of his team in successfully repelling an enraged Anguirus from the Florida coastline. While Riviera, Incense, and Nuki all relaxed on the beach after the battle, Jacen stowed away on Dr. Rumi's boat as she was searching for Anguirus. Rumi initially scolds Jacen for tagging along when she finds out he's on the boat, but Jacen says he only wanted to make sure Rumi would be okay, mentioning how he hates when people leave him ever since his mother left to run some errands right before dying in a Godzilla attack. He is quick to slip back into his self-confident persona however when the two discuss Anguirus, claiming the kaiju fled because of him and that he was eager to get his revenge on the monster in a rematch. Before the two could continue their search for Anguirus, however, Jacen was grabbed by a giant leech and dragged beneath the waves by the creature and its swarm.
Abilities
Physical abilities
Jacen's strength is amplified by Kai-Sei, the same energy that powers Godzilla, giving him the ability to potentially match the physical might of some kaiju. He is able to shatter one of Anguirus' spines with a single punch and was able to knock the creature's head back with the help of his teammates.
Pyrokinesis
The Kai-Sei energy he uses can also be produce excess heat, as demonstrated when he unleashed a small amount to instantaneously cook a box of popcorn.
Agility
Jacen possesses very keen reflexes and great athletic ability, able to effortlessly dodge physical strikes from both Jet Jaguar and Riviera, as well as dodge Nuki's laser barrage and Incense' incendiary blasts.
Durability
Jacen was able to withstand the full force of Godzilla's atomic breath and a powerful tail whip without suffering any major injuries.
Trivia
- The premise of Jacen, that being a humanoid with superpowers serving as a soldier in an anti-kaiju taskforce, recalls to Shinichi Ozaki from Godzilla Final Wars, a Mutant soldier serving the M-Organization division of the Earth Defense Force.
