Kong's a pretty good king. Keeps to himself mostly. This is his home, we're just guests here. But you don't go into someone's house and start dropping bombs unless you're picking a fight.

— Lt. Hank Marlow (Kong: Skull Island)

Lieutenant Hank Marlow is a supporting character in the 2017 Legendary Pictures film Kong: Skull Island.

Description

A one-time WWII fighter pilot who crash-landed on Skull Island, Marlow has spent the last 28 years as a castaway in this strange land, surviving with the help of the indigenous Iwi tribe. Though wildly eccentric, the knowledge of its terrain and inhabitants becomes critical to the team’s survival.[1]

History

Kong: Skull Island

In 1944, Hank Marlow had been serving in the United States Air Force, whose plane was shot down amid a dogfight and crashed on Skull Island. Upon landing on the island, he encountered Gunpei Ikari, a Japanese Zero Fighter pilot, and the two engaged in a brief and brutal clash, before Kong interrupted it. Some time following their encounter with the Titan, Marlow and Ikari formed a brotherly bond, helping each other survive on the Skull Island's ecosystem. They worked together, repurposing a crashed aircraft into a boat with which they could escape the island, but a Skullcrawler killed Ikari before the craft could be completed. Marlow kept his friend's katana in memorial of him.

Marlow had been living with the Iwi until 1973, when he encountered James Conrad and his group of survivors, who happened into the Iwi's territory. Marlow quickly diffused the standoff and led the survivors to the Iwi village, providing them safety and telling them of Kong and the Skullcrawlers, and warning that a giant Skullcrawler would emerge if Kong were to fall. Marlow and Conrad's group were able to complete construction of the Grey Fox, the boat that he and Ikari were building, and set off down the river, before which Marlow took Gunpei's katana with him. Soon after, the group met up with Lieutenant Colonel Preston Packard, and the group agreed to travel west to rescue Jack Chapman despite Marlow's warning that it would bring them into Skullcrawler territory. The group entered a boneyard, where they were attacked by a Skullcrawler, against which Marlow wielded Gunpei's sword. After the Skullcrawler was killed and the group left the boneyard, Marlow insisted that they leave the area. Packard revealed that the reason for their trek west was instead to salvage weapons from a fallen helicopter that Chapman remained near in order to kill Kong, Marlow decried Packard's plan. In the face of Packard's determination, Marlow drew his sword in order to stop the Lieutenant Colonal, but Packard struck him down with the butt of his gun. Upon Conrad's deescelation of the situation, Marlow went with Conrad and his group in order to find the Grey Fox.

At night, when Packard enacted his plan to kill Kong, Marlow went with Conrad and Mason Weaver to stop the Lieutenant Colonel before he could finish the Titan off. After a standoff between Packard and his men, the Skull Devil erupted up from below a lake, much to Marlow's warning. He and the survivors fled to the Grey Fox as the sun rose, and attempted to get it working as the Skull Devil approached.

After Kong killed the Skull Devil, Marlow and the remaining survivors traveled down the river on the Grey Fox before they were rescued. Some time after, Marlow was reunited with his wife and finally met his son.
