Nanbara (南原) was an INTERPOL agent who appeared in the 1974 film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. He trailed Keisuke Shimizu and Saeko Kanagusuku from Okinawa to Tokyo, constantly shadowing them as well as Black Hole Planet 3 Alien agent Yanagawa.

Nanbara, along with the Black Hole Planet 3 Alien agent Yanagawa, observed Saeko Kanagusuku at Shuri University while she was deciphering a prophecy that she and Keisuke Shimizu had discovered with a statue of King Caesar. He then boarded the same plane that Saeko and Keisuke were on, just a row ahead of them, introducing himself as a freelance reporter who hoped to gain profit from reporting on the story of the statue. He continued to follow them, watching them from a distance after Yanagawa failed to steal the statue and then going on board a cruise ship called the Queen Coral. When Yanagawa held Keisuke at gunpoint, he was shot in the back by a hidden Nanbara and fell overboard. After this, Nanbara revealed himself to Keisuke and Saeko, although he withheld his involvement with Yanagawa's death and instead told the two that it was “a fine night for romance”.
Nanbara continued to follow Keisuke to Gyokusen Cave, saving his life again by attacking another Black Hole Planet 3 Alien. He finally revealed his name to Keisuke and explained that he was actually an agent of INTERPOL. He added that his organization had been investigating the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens for six months, and he started following Keisuke after he became involved. They took the alien hostage and entered a hidden base, knocking out their prisoner and two more aliens along the way. After freeing Professor Hideto Miyajima, his daughter Ikuko, and Keisuke's brother Masahiko from an execution chamber, Nanbara shot and killed two other aliens who attempted to stop them from leaving. All of them escaped the base and reached Keisuke's car; Nanbara anticipated a trap and used a wire to turn the ignition on from outside the vehicle, activating a bomb. Nanbara told the others to head to Azumi Castle while he went back into the aliens' base to deal with them. Masahiko and Professor Miyajima insisted on accompanying him, the latter feeling remorse for helping the aliens and being the only one able to destroy Mechagodzilla’s head controls. All three infiltrated the base, Nanbara tricking and killing a guard in order to gain further entry. While this was happening, Nanbara's partner Tamura aided Keisuke and the others at Azumi Castle when they used the statue to awaken King Caesar.
Being too late to stop Mechagodzilla from being deployed, Miyajima realised that they could still stop the cyborg by destroying the control room. Nanbara, Miyajima, and Masahiko entered the aliens' control room, only to be trapped by their security system. The men were handcuffed and forced to watch Mechagodzilla fight King Caesar on a monitor. Just before Godzilla joined the battle against Mechagodzilla, Nanbara and Miyajima started to develop a plan to free the former. When Mechagodzilla was defeated, Nanbara picked the lock on his handcuffs and freed his hands, going on to throw the two halves of Miyajima's special metal pipe at opposite ends of the aliens' computer, causing it to malfunction. Nanbara ran behind one of the aliens and, using him as a shield, shot and killed the remaining Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens in the room, one being their leader Kuronuma. As the base began to self-destruct, Nanbara unlocked Miyajima and Masahiko's handcuffs, the three escaping just before the base exploded.
