— Narration during the Piranhadon attack in the 2005 King Kong novelization

Carnahan is a fictional character who appeared in the 1976 and 2005 King Kong remakes. In the 1976 King Kong, Carnahan is a first mate on the Petrox Explorer;[1] he led a rescue party into the wilds of Skull Island and was killed by Kong. In the 2005 King Kong, Carnahan is a Venture crewman who joined the rescue party on Skull Island and was eaten by a Piranhadon. The scene of his death was cut from the theatrical version of the 2005 film, and his name is only revealed in Christopher Golden's novelization.

History

King Kong (1976)

The Petrox Explorer, with Ross as captain and Carnahan as first mate, set sail from Surabaya, Indonesia. A day later, while the ship was out at sea, Carnahan attended a presentation by Fred Wilson, the leader of oil exploration expedition. Carnahan listened to him, Roy Bagley, and stowaway Jack Prescott, who believed that the carbon at the site of the supposed island might be a sign not of oil, but of a giant animal. Wilson pressed Carnahan for an explanation about Prescott, who was wearing a Petrox Corporation uniform, but the first mate knew nothing about this passenger. Prescott soon noticed a life raft not far from the ship. There was an unconscious girl lying there, and Carnahan, picking her up, made sure that she was alive. When she woke up in the cabin, she said that her name was Dwan and that her yacht exploded during a recent storm. Dwan joined the voyage, and over the next days Carnahan became noticeably attached to her, though not as much as Prescott.

When the ship stopped in front of a fog bank, Carnahan led a reconnaissance party that sailed further on a small boat. The fog soon cleared and the group reached the shore of Skull Island. They walked up a wide canyon and soon discovered a native settlement near a giant wooden wall. The chief noticed the strangers and tried to take Dwan by force to participate in some kind of ritual, and Carnahan, along with several other crewmen, began shooting into the air to scare off the islanders. During the night, the natives kidnapped Dwan, and Carnahan and the others went to the island to rescue her. They arrived too late, when Dwan had already been carried away into the jungle by the giant ape Kong.

Carnahan moments before falling off the log

Carnahan, Prescott, Joe Perko, Boan, Garcia, and Timmons went to look for Dwan. Not finding her right away, the party stopped for the night in the forest, and Carnahan asked Prescott if he thought Kong was going to marry Dwan. Angrily, Prescott replied that he knew nothing. The next day they made slow progress as a greedy Wilson radioed for them to remember to set up seismic equipment along the way. Not feeling delighted, Carnahan nevertheless carried out his instructions, which caused reproaches from Prescott. At night they wandered higher into the mountains and a deep chasm blocked their way. A massive log lay across it, and Prescott, at Perko's request, went across it first. After making sure that the path was safe, Carnahan, Perko, Timmons, Garcia, and Boan went ahead, but suddenly Kong, whose appearance they had not noticed at first, growled terribly on the other side. Carnahan and the others opened fire on him, but the bullets only angered the monstrous ape. Kong walked up to the log and began to rotate it. Garcia, Timmons, and Perko fell into the abyss one after another. Carnahan held on tightly as he lay on the log, but seeing the ferocious beast in front of him, at some point he got up and tried to move back. Before he could take a step, he too fell, letting out a cry near Prescott, who was hiding in a niche under a log. Carnahan became the fourth and last person to die on Skull Island during this expedition.

Carnahan was a sailor on the tramp steamer Venture that was sailing to Skull Island. Like many others, Carnahan became friends with Carl Denham's film crew and spent his free time with them on deck. When the ship sailed into the fog, Carnahan was among the first to know that they were approaching land, since he held a lead-line with which another sailor was measuring the depth. A day later, Carnahan was throwing off ballast on the captain's orders so that the lightened ship could sail away from the rocks. When they were ready to set out to open sea, Jack Driscoll suddenly reported that the natives had kidnapped Ann Darrow from the ship. Carnahan went to rescue her in the same whaler with Driscoll and Englehorn, and then joined the group that went beyond the wall to save the actress from the giant beast Kong.

Piranhadon is ready to grab Carnahan

After encountering a Ferrucutus and escaping from a herd of Brontosaurus and a pack of Venatosaurus, Carnahan stayed with the group and tried to stop one sailor who went after Bruce Baxter. Soon they were floating on two rafts across the swamp, Carnahan was on one raft with Driscoll, Preston, Choy, Jimmy, and two other sailors. Soon they were attacked by Scorpio-pedes, and then by a huge Piranhadon. The fish destroyed the raft and Carnahan quickly sank to the bottom due to the heavy ammo pack. Driscoll, who was also carrying an ammo pack, soon sank down not far from him. The fish was approaching. Having shed his ballast, Carnahan began to float up, ignoring Driscoll, who was signaling him to stay at the bottom. At the very surface, the Piranhadon grabbed Carnahan and quickly ate him.

As part of the crew of the Venture, Carnahan sailed to Skull Island. He went in search of the kidnapped actress Ann Darrow together with Lumpy, Turcotte, Brandon, and other sailors. As they were crossing the swamp, a Piranhadon attacked them. Almost drowned, Carnahan began to float up, but, before he reached the surface, the Piranhadon grabbed him in its jaws, leaving a trail of blood in the water. Without finishing chewing Carnahan, the predator swam towards Driscoll, but he hid from it among the roots of the tree.
