Joe Perko
|
Joe Perko is a petroleum engineer who appeared in the 1976 King Kong remake. He worked for the Petrox Corporation and sailed to Skull Island in search of oil. On the island, Perko, along with Jack Prescott and four other crew members, went in search of the kidnapped Dwan. He was ultimately killed by Kong.
Development
In the original version of the script, Joe Perko was the leading character, similar to Jack Driscoll from the 1933 King Kong. His role was later reduced to a minor character, with Jack Prescott becoming the central male protagonist.[1]
History
King Kong (1976)
Joe Perko was in Surabaya preparing to sail on the Petrox Explorer with Fred Wilson's crew. Noticing that they were not taking enough pipes with them, Perko suspected that this would be an unusual expedition. When they sailed far enough from the shore and Wilson and Roy Bagley began to tell the crew about the destination, Perko was the first to guess that his boss hoped to find oil on the unexplored island. He listened silently to Jack Prescott, who interrupted Wilson during his presentation. Soon, a life raft with the unconscious young actress Dwan was found near the Petrox Explorer. Perko and Carnahan lifted her onto the ship, but Captain Ross did not trust them to provide her with first aid.

Later, Perko and eight other crew members sailed through the fog bank in a small boat and reached Skull Island, where they discovered a native settlement near the giant wall. When the chief noticed them and took interest in Dwan, Perko and the others began shooting into the air, scaring off the natives. They returned to the ship and thought over plans for the coming days, but at night the natives kidnapped Dwan. Perko went to the island as part of a rescue group, but Dwan had already been carried off into the jungle by the monstrous ape Kong, to whom the natives gave her as a wife. Prescott, Carnahan, Perko, Boan, Garcia, and Timmons went after Kong. They made slow progress throughout the day as Wilson radioed orders to set seismic charges. When night fell again, they reached a deep chasm in the mountains and found a log lying across it. Perko demanded that Prescott go first. After making sure that the path was secure, the rest of the crew followed Prescott, but suddenly Kong appeared on the other side of the chasm. Perko and the others began shooting, which enraged Kong. The beast approached and began shaking the log, throwing the men into the abyss. Perko held on for a while, but eventually fell from a fatal height.
Trivia
- While filming at Cathedral Beach on Kauai, Jack O'Halloran fell on a rock and received a severe cut above his eye. The actor was flown to the hospital by helicopter and received 35 stitches, returning to work the next day.[2]
