Mike (Universal)

Mike was a sound recordist on Carl Denham's film crew in the 2005 King Kong remake and several of its adaptations. Sailing on the Venture, he took part in the first filming of the voyage and became the first victim on deadly Skull Island.
History
King Kong (2005)
Mike arrived on the Venture as director Carl Denham was rushing to leave New York City to avoid problems with investors. Unnoticed by Ann Darrow, Mike discussed work matters with Carl at the dock. Time was running out, and they managed to swim away before the police arrived. In preparation for filming in the mess room, Mike discussed with Denham the potential difficulties of recording sounds. At that moment, Ann approached them. Carl was about to introduce the new actress to the film crew, and Ann shook Mike's hand with trepidation, mistaking him for Jack Driscoll, her favorite playwright. The real Jack appeared soon after, and Mike could only watch in awkward silence as he greeted his admirer. During the voyage, Mike helped Denham film several scenes, and when the ship arrived at Skull Island, he went ashore with the rest of the film crew and four sailors.
Mike followed Jack across the bridge over the coastal gorge, and then they saw an ancient settlement near the giant wall. Denham was sure that no one had lived there for a long time, but suddenly they saw a girl among the ruins. Mike watched in alarm as Carl approached the silent girl. When the child began to show aggression, Mike, along with Driscoll and actor Bruce Baxter, but much more quietly, asked Denham to leave her alone. But other Skull Islanders emerged from the shadows, drawn by Denham's behavior. Despite Denham's claims that the villagers were harmless, one of them pierced Mike with a spear, causing Ann to scream in fear. Kong's loud roar came from behind the wall in response, and Mike fell lifeless as the natives charged at the rest of the group. The following night, when the rescued Denham was drinking lemonade on the ship, he declared decisively that he would finish the film in memory of Mike and give the proceeds to his wife and children.

King Kong (2005)
Mike sailed on the Venture with Carl Denham's crew and was responsible for the sound recording of his film. When the ship became stuck among the rocks at Skull Island, Mike, Herbert and other members of Denham's crew sailed to the coast in a whaler. They filmed one short scene and suddenly a terrible roar was heard from the island, which Bruce Baxter took for the roar of a bear. Denham walked resolutely further, through the eroded tunnel of the ancient tomb. Mike and the others followed him. All other scenes involving Mike are the same as in the film.
Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World (2007)
As in the film, Mike traveled on the Venture to Skull Island. After filming one short scene near the coastal cliffs, the film crew heard a frightening roar from the depths of the island. Mike went further with the others. Soon, he became the first victim of Skull Islanders, stabbed in the back with a "very long knife". The rest of the scenes with Mike are almost identical to the movie.
Comics
King Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World (2005)
Mike went on a trip to Skull Island as part of Carl Denham's film crew. He was responsible for sound recording on the ship's set. Upon arrival at the island, he went ashore with Carl, Ann Darrow, Jack Driscoll, Bruce Baxter, Preston, and Herb. They passed through a small patch of jungle and found a village near the giant wall when they were suddenly surrounded by hostile Skull Islanders. An old shaman woman ordered Ann to be captured to be sacrificed to Kong, and the villagers attacked the strangers. Mike and Herb stood near the tree, watching the other crew members fight them off.
Unlike the film, Mike's murder is not shown in the comic. When Englehorn's group started shooting and the villagers ran away in fear, a man resembling Mike stood on the hill. He did not appear in subsequent scenes.

Trivia
- For the scene where his character is skewered by a spear, Craig Hall wore armor made from the fiberglass product called Kevlar, to which two parts of the spear were attached with anchoring points at the front and back sides. About five repeats of the spear were made to shoot this moment.[1]
