Deplector is a fictional species of terrestrial crab that first appeared in the 2005 film King Kong. With massive pincers, they are among the largest invertebrates on Skull Island.

Design

Female Deplectors are huge land crabs with gray to orange armor on their bodies, with 12-foot-long antennae and 6-foot-long claws. Males are much smaller than females but slightly bigger than newborn females, and they are small, pale, soft-shelled, and defenseless.

Ecology

Deplectors were land crabs that lived in the cracks and crevices of Skull Island. While they lacked eyes, the Deplectors used their antennae to locate prey, mainly giant flocks of Vultursaurus which amassed at night, and often would eat about a dozen at a time. Deplectors used a sticky anchor cord to keep them fastened to the rock walls as they hunted; however, they could be severed at will. Females laid hundreds of eggs at a time, and they all left into the chasm after hatching. Male Deplectors are noticeably dwarfed by females, and never leave their larval stage. Instead, they inhabit a female's cave and fertilize their eggs.

History

King Kong (2005)

While the Venture crew members were fighting with the monsters from the bug pit, a Deplector grabbed a Venture crew member with its claws and killed him inside its cave. A bit later, another Deplector caught the discarded body of a dead sailor near two Arachno-claws. One more individual tried to attack Jimmy while he was shooting at Weta-rexes, but the sailor hit it hard enough with his gun to shatter half of its left claw into pieces. Several Deplectors and Arachno-claws began to surround the last survivors, with one huge Deplector with giant claws crawling close to Jack Driscoll, Carl Denham, and Jimmy a few seconds before they saw Englehorn shooting at the monsters from above. At that moment, one Deplector crawled out of the cave located at the top of the pit, but its claw was shattered into pieces by bullets that hit it from the opposite side of the chasm. Bruce Baxter descended on a vine to the very bottom, where he shot several Arachno-claws and Deplectors. Other individuals hid in caves.

Abilities

Claws

Female Deplectors have a pair of huge strong claws.

Armor

Female Deplectors have a strong armor all over their bodies.

Camouflage

Deplectors are excellently camouflaged among rocks due to their dull coloring and the texture of their exoskeleton. This camouflage helps them during ambush hunting.

Weaknesses

The large claws of Deplectors are covered with chitin, but it is not strong enough to protect them from pinpoint blows and bullets.
