Harinezura (ハリネズラ) is a mole-like kaiju which first appeared in the manga Gamera the Giant Monster.
Names
Harinezura's name is derived from the Japanese word for "hedgehog," harinezumi (針鼠 or ハリネズミ). Its name may also be a reference to the unmade Daiei monster Nezura, itself named after nezumi (鼠 or ネズミ), meaning "rat" or "mouse."
Design
Despite its name, Harinezura heavily resembles a mole.

Trivia
- Harinezura shares its subtitle of "Subterranean Monster" with the Toho monster Baragon.
- Harinezura's distinct head design is extremely similar to that of Umiushi (ウミウシ), an unused precursor to Viras.[1] While several other original kaiju featured in the manga also derived influence from unused Gamera foes, Harinezura's name instead appears to reference Nezura, another possible influence in its creation.
