Decarnocimex
|
Decarnocimex are giant carnivorous insects native to Skull Island who appear in the 2005 film King Kong.
Name
The name Decarnocimex means "flesh removing bug".[1]
Design
The Decarnocimex design is based on real mole crickets. Like its real-life counterparts, it has very short wings, an enlarged carapace above its head, and specialized forelimbs. However, the front limbs of Decarnocimex end in pincers, and there are a pair of small spikes on its carapace. A notable feature is the complete absence of antennae, the main characteristic of most insects.
In The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island and King Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World, Decarnocimex possesses bladed forelimbs, like real mole crickets, instead of pincers.
Ecology
Huge relatives of crickets, Decarnocimexes lived in deep burrows on Skull Island. With sharp claws and mandibles, they were aggressive predators as well as scavengers and fed on small animals that fallen into their chasm. Adult females laid eggs in holes dug in the walls of the chasm. Leaving the meat there, they sealed the entrance with mucus, and the hatched young fed on the decaying meat until they grew large and strong enough to chew their way out.[1]

King Kong (2005)
Thrown to the bottom of a deep chasm by Kong, the Venture crew members were attacked by giant bugs. After Jack Driscoll's flare was thrown down, the Weta-rexes and the first Decarnocimex began to approach. They attacked Carl Denham, who was depressed after his camera broke, but he quickly came to his senses and began to fight back decisively with an unloaded gun. Disoriented by the rapid blows raining down on its head, the first Decarnocimex started to retreat, but two of its kind crawled towards Denham from other sides. Denham continued to fight back viciously and successfully, preventing one of them from attacking Jimmy when he ran to the ammo bag. At least one Decarnocimex crawled down towards the three survivors along with Arachno-claws and Deplectors, but at that moment Captain Englehorn's rescue party arrived and began shooting at the giant arthropods.
Abilities

Weaknesses
Repeated and strong hits to the head of Decarnocimex can disorient it.

When the crew of the Venture was pushed by Kong into the deep chasm, Decarnocimexes and other huge bugs attacked them. They got quite close to the survivors, but the rescue team came in time and opened fire on the giant arthropods.
