Arachno-claws are arthropod creatures who appear in the 2005 film King Kong.

Development

Monstrous arthropods, including "crab/spider things", are present in the 1996 script, where they attack Jack Driscoll and two other sailors who have fallen to the bottom of a chasm.[2] In the later undated script, crab-spiders are present in a similar scene. One of them attacks Lumpy, but Driscoll pulls it away and provokes the entire swarm to attack him.[3] In the film itself, these creatures were replaced by Weta-rexes, while the Arachno-claws became larger and more dangerous enemies that attack in the same scene, but later.

Name

Its scientific name is Arachnocidis, which means "spider-claw".[1]

Design

Arachno-claws resemble a mixture of a crayfish and a spider. They have six legs and a pair of pincers. They have two antennae on their heads and dark brown glassy eyes. Their whole body is covered with a crab-like armor.

Ecology

Arachno-claws laid their microscopic eggs in carrion of the chasm floor, but most were either eaten by carrion eaters, or drowned in the slime that coated the pit's bottom. They were then ingested by Carnictis, in the guts of which they hatched and lived as stomach parasites until they pupated and emerged from the rectum as miniature adults, already capable of scavenging for food.

History

King Kong (2005)

Arachno-claws lived at the bottom of the chasm where Kong had thrown several Venture crew members. Soon after Lumpy and Jack Driscoll woke up from their fall, several Weta-rexes, Arachno-claws, and one Deplector began to crawl out of their holes towards them. Driscoll threw a flare in their direction, and the arthropods hid for a while. They crawled again when the flare died down. While the survivors fought with Weta-rexes, Carnictis, and Decarnocimex, Arachno-claws descended the walls and began to eat the dead bodies, grabbing and throwing them up with their pincers. More and more creatures crawled out of their shelters. Together with Deplector, Arachno-claws surrounded Driscoll, Jimmy and Carl Denham, but at that moment Englehorn and his crewmen came to their aid and began shooting the arthropods. Bruce Baxter came down quickly on a vine, shot several Arachno-claws, and shot two of them at point-blank range. The rest hid in their caves again and did not try to attack the humans who were climbing up.

Abilities

Pincers

Arachno-claws have a pair of strong pincers.

While hiding under tree roots in a jungle clearing, Ann Darrow was set upon by an Arachno-claw before running away and being rescued by Kong.

King Kong (2005)

When the Carnictis crawled out of the earth to attack the crew of the Venture, the Arachno-claws came out of the darkness to seize the opportunity. After Jack Driscoll stabbed a Carnictis to death, two Arachno-claws approached from behind as several others devoured Lumpy and Choy. Filled with rage and despair, Carl Denham began to smash the attacking crab-spiders apart with a club. The survivors tried to stave the creatures off, but were quickly surrounded with Arachno-claws and other creatures emerging from their burrows. However, gunfire from above saved them as other humans began blasting the bugs apart with bullets, forcing them to retreat.

Comics

King Kong: The 8th Wonder of the World

When the crew of the Venture was pushed by Kong into the Skull Island chasm, the Carnictis, Decarnocimex, and Weta-rexes came to prey on them. As the lesser predators were scared off by gunfire, the Arachno-claws moved in, but when one attacked Jack Driscoll, it was shot to death by the rescue party.
