Starship Godzilla is an upcoming 2025 ongoing comic series by IDW Publishing. Part of a shared universe of Godzilla comics dubbed the Kai-Sei Era, alongside Godzilla and Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, it will debut on October 1, 2025.[1] The series will be written by Chris Gooch and illustrated by Oliver Ono, and will follow a team of spacefaring mercenaries who embark on kaiju-related missions throughout the galaxy using their starship, the S.S. Mechagodzilla.[2][3] While Godzilla's name is present in the title, it is unclear if he will appear; it has instead been billed as a "Mechagodzilla standalone series".[4]

Description

For the first time in Toho canon, this trip through the stars will bridge the gap between the various alien races. They’ve come to Earth in past tales, but now it’s time to visit their worlds as a crew of misfits embark on high-risk high-reward kaiju-based missions with a secret that could impact the whole universe.[5]

Issues

Development

IDW Publishing first revealed plans for a new Godzilla shared universe with the solicitation of Godzilla: The New Heroes in November 2024. The series was formally announced alongside Godzilla and Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone on February 19, 2025, as part of IGN's Fan Fest event.[2] The full synopsis was revealed later that day on the official Godzilla website.[5]

According to editor Jake Williams in a Reddit AMA, six issues of the series had been "pretty much fully written" by early June 2025.[6]

Trivia

  • Starship Godzilla will be IDW Publishing's second comic series focusing on a kaiju other than Godzilla, following Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, also released in 2025.
  • Despite featuring human-like characters in the main cast, series editor Jake Williams has confirmed that none of the characters in this series are from Earth.[7] This makes Starship Godzilla the second IDW Publishing comic with an entirely alien main cast, following the ninth issue of Godzilla Rivals, Vs. Spacegodzilla from 2023.
  • One of the crew members of the S.S. Mechagodzilla, Lif, is a Simian.[3] This marks the first time that a Simian has been a protagonist in any piece of Godzilla media.

Currently those are fully conceptualized (and pretty much fully written). We're now starting to plan out season 2 of each (pre-orders will help make sure those season 2's happen!) Godzilla is an ongoing that will be released every single month--we currently have a really strong outline for the first 12, and ideas of where we want to go from there!". Reddit.
