Godzilla vs. Marvel (2025)
|
Godzilla vs. Marvel is a series of six one-shot comic books from Marvel Comics. Each issue, made by a different creative team and taking place in a different time period, featured Godzilla and other Toho kaiju crossing over with Marvel's most prominent superheroes, including the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the New Avengers, and Thor. The series ran from March 19 to July 2, 2025, and marked Marvel's first new Godzilla comic since Godzilla #24 from 1979, as well as the first-ever appearances of other Toho monsters in any Marvel comic.

Trivia
- The Hulk and the X-Men are the only starring heroes who did not previously appear in Marvel's Godzilla. However, Godzilla and the Hulk have appeared together in a comical illustration included in the "Godzilla-Grams" section of Godzilla #1 and on a special Godzilla Variant Cover for Incredible Hulk (vol. 4) #17. Godzilla also faced founding X-Men members Angel and Iceman in Godzilla #3, when they were members of the Champions, and appeared alongside past and present X-Men members Dazzler, Deadpool, Cyclops, Phoenix, Rogue, and Wolverine on Godzilla Variant Covers for several other comics.
- Unlike previous American Godzilla comic series, several installments of Godzilla vs. Marvel boast clear references to Godzilla films to imply a version of certain films happened within the continuity of some issues. For instance, Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four mentions Daisuke Serizawa employing the Oxygen Destroyer against Godzilla in the aftermath of his first appearance in Tokyo, similar to events depicted in 1954's Godzilla. More notably, Godzilla vs. Thor is presented as a direct continuation of 2001's Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack with multiple direct references to the film, mentioning Godzilla's supernatural origins, his rampage through Yokohama, and his defeat to the Guardian Monsters that left behind nothing but a disembodied yet beating heart. As references to other Marvel titles are also present in multiple issues, several installments of this series thus appear to be set in worlds in which some variation of select Godzilla films and events of the mainstream Marvel Earth-616 continuity occurred.
- Though Godzilla vs. Spider-Man directly references Godzilla vs. Hulk in both an editorial note and in-universe dialogue, no other issues of Godzilla vs. Marvel appear to share continuity. Notably, Godzilla vs. Hulk mentions the deaths of Tony Stark and Fin Fang Foom, only for both to appear in Godzilla vs. Avengers without any acknowledgement of their demises, while Godzilla vs. Thor presents itself as a direct continuation of Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, creating irreconcilable continuity errors between issues of the series.
- Four of the six issues in the series give Godzilla a new form/appearance and access to new powers by combining him with features previously introduced in the Marvel Universe. These include Godzilla being granted the Power Cosmic by the Silver Surfer; being mutated by Hulk's gamma-irradiated blood; merging with the Venom Symbiote; and being possessed and empowered by The Beast and All-Black the Necrosword.
- Despite being featured on the promotional artwork/poster for the series, Rogue, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Scarlet Witch do not appear in any issues of the series. As the latter four characters are regular members of the team, it is possible that they were originally intended to appear in Godzilla vs. Avengers, while Rogue may have been planned to appear in Godzilla vs. X-Men.
- As the first Marvel series to utilize other Toho creations besides Godzilla himself, a total of ten other Toho kaiju appear in some capacity, with King Ghidorah, Kumonga, Mothra, Mechagodzilla, Hedorah, Anguirus, and Jet Jaguar making physical appearances, while mechanical versions of Biollante, Battra, and Fire Rodan were incorporated into the Tri-Sentinelmechakaiju (in addition to being named directly). Jet Jaguar is the sole kaiju to also appear on a cover, appearing on variants of both Godzilla vs. Avengers and Godzilla vs. Hulk despite not appearing in the latter.
