In issues past, we’ve learned of the ancient kaiju cult and met some of its more famous members. But now it’s time to finally reveal the reason they have reconvened. What threat is so fearsome, so earth-shattering, that it’s not only brought together the most powerful men in the world but the most powerful monsters?
Also in this issue, an ancient Mesoamerican myth is discovered, detailing a clash between Rodan and Spanish conquistadors attempting to conquer the Aztecs.[1] |

Plot
As they ride in a coach, President Thomas Jefferson relates another legend of the kaiju to Mortimer Lane. In the 14th century, the powerful Mayan Empire attributed its standing to Rodan, to whom they made daily human sacrifices. When Spanish conquistadors led by Fernando Suez enslaved the Mayans and forced them to mine for gold, they prayed to Rodan for salvation. After months, he answered, killing most of the conquistadors with shockwaves and his Uranium Heat Ray while crushing Suez underfoot. The Mayans rejoiced as Rodan departed. The takeaway, Jefferson explains, is that kaiju have a history of protecting their followers, from threats both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. Lane is incredulous at the existence of aliens, though Jefferson reminds him that they're no stranger than kaiju. He confirms Lane's supposition that the Sons of Giants recruited him for his article on the Louisiana Purchase, though there is another reason as well. He elaborates that while in times past the Sons would have simply dispatched Lane, the present threat is so great that he's more useful to them alive than dead. Napoleon Bonaparte, though a fellow Son, sold the Louisiana territory to the U.S. because he was aware of a sinister presence there and sought to focus on conquering Europe. Jefferson organized the Lewis and Clark Expedition to determine what exactly is out there, though he's yet to hear back from them.
Jefferson and Lane stop in front of the late Benjamin Franklin's house, who once employed Lane as an apprentice: the second reason the Sons recruited him. Franklin imparted upon Jefferson some of his beliefs that humanity had been visited by aliens for millennia and owed many advances to them, though the visitors ultimately had ill intentions for the planet and lived amongst humanity in secret. His plan to repulse them involved both kaiju and something else. Lane is skeptical that he'll be of any help, however, as Franklin never shared any such knowledge with him. Jefferson hopes, however, that Lane can help him discover Jefferson's rumored workshop. Lane, though he never saw it, is reminded how often Jefferson spoke of the historical significance of Rome, prompting the president to resume his story of the great kaiju battle there.
Though outnumbered four-to-one, King Ghidorah broke free of Mothra's webbing, countered Hedorah's attempts to strangle it with gravity beams, and flapped his wings to send Rodan crashing into the Colosseum. Godzilla tackled the dragon off his feat, but he quickly recovered, picking Godzilla up and slamming him into the ground. Lane is surprised at the apparent conclusion of the battle as they enter Jefferson's house. Unbeknownst to them, Vice President Aaron Burr has followed them. When the coach driver recognizes him, he disintegrates the man with a laser pistol, revealing himself as a Xilien.
