Plot
Peter Parker, clad in a black Spider-Man suit, battles the Shocker in New York City, happy to be back home after his time in Battleworld. He notices that Shocker has renovated his Vibro-Gauntlets, though Spider-Man himself has an upgrade too in the form of his new suit, made of a shapeshifting alien material he found off-world. He continues to evade Shocker's blasts, then retaliates with his webs while recalling other recent developments: his romance with Black Cat and another reprimanding by his boss, J. Jonah Jameson, who demands he take better photos to keep the Daily Bugle competitive with Eddie Brock's Globe. Just before he can clobber Shocker, a loud roar alerts him to Godzilla's arrival in New York City.
Seeing the destruction Godzilla is unleashing, Shocker willingly surrenders as Spider-Man webs him up. Spider-Man recalls that he last heard of Godzilla when he battled the Hulk. He knows that he can't reason with Godzilla and stands no chance against the monster; instead, he resolves to help civilians stay out of Godzilla's path while waiting for the Avengers' arrival. As Spider-Man notices that Godzilla seems to be searching for something, he realizes in horror that the kaiju is heading towards his apartment; worse, Mary Jane "MJ" Watson is there, having just returned from Hollywood. He swings her to safety just Godzilla destroys the building, while a panicked MJ cries out Peter's name. As Spider-Man tries to put her at ease by telling her that Peter is likely fine, MJ reveals that she's known for years that Spider-Man and Peter are the same person, leaving him bewildered. As he sets them down on a roof, Black Cat suddenly appears and gives him a big hug while calling him "lover", angering MJ. As the two demand he explain exactly who the other is, he decides that engaging Godzilla is the better option, calling to Black Cat to take MJ away.
Spider-Man evades the monster's snapping jaws as he tries luring him to the West Side, where there's less to destroy. Godzilla's roar, however, unexpectedly causes his costume to scream and fly off of him. As Spider-Man recovers, the costume expands to completely envelop Godzilla, leading him to realize that the suit is a living being. Godzilla, now bound to Venom, is subject to a psychic connection with Knull, a dangerous godlike figure who was originally tasked by the Celestials to keep the universe in balance but instead chose to destroy it with his army of symbiotes. Even though Godzilla has roamed the Earth since the age of the dinosaurs to protect the planet from those who threaten it, his mind is being overtaken by Venom, causing him to lash out at the city instead as he destroys two attacking fighter jets. As Black Cat and MJ lead fellow civilians to safety while insulting each other, Spider-Man, having covered his face in a green jacket to protect his identity, follows the corrupted King of the Monsters, feeling scared but vowing to rescue Godzilla or die trying. Tanks engage Godzilla as Venom grows stronger, though Godzilla's fighting spirit continues to prevent him from exerting total control. Spider-Man, now in his normal costume, arrives with Shocker's gauntlets and glider. Having concluded that Venom is vulnerable to sonic blasts, he has recalibrated the gauntlets to the frequency of Godzilla's roar. He delivers a powerful punch that forcibly separates Venom and Godzilla, delivering a particularly awful pun in the process, while MJ and Black Cat watch nearby with dismay. Injured by the blast, Spider-Man falls, but is caught by Godzilla. Venom, still assuming Godzilla's form and now even larger, attacks him as Spider-Man swings away. Though the symbiote has adapted to become impossible to kill with raw strength alone, Godzilla has also adapted and blasts Venom away with a powerful blast of atomic breath. Spider-Man cheers for Godzilla's victory and vows to always make his suits himself as the King of the Monsters swims away.
Days after Godzilla's devastating attack, Manhattan is slowly beginning to recover. Amid the wreckage, Eddie Brock discovers the crushed body of a reporter buried beneath the rubble. Spotting the journalist's intact camera, he seizes it, intending to claim their photos as his own, a ploy to sabotage his longtime rival, Peter Parker, just as Peter once ruined him. But before he can leave, black tendrils suddenly lash out from the shadows. Venom, still alive and mutated by his brief fusion with Godzilla, emerges from the darkness. The symbiote ensnares Eddie and drags him into a nearby alley to bond with him. Infused with the monstrous essence of the kaiju, the symbiote transforms Eddie into a new terror: Godvenom.

Trivia
- This issue was released on the same day as IDW Publishing's Godzilla vs. America: Los Angeles.
- Though Spider-Man previously appeared in Marvel's Godzilla #24, taking a picture of Godzilla, the two had never fought in a story until this issue. In a possible reference to that moment, this Spider-Man says, "I wish I had my camera..." when Godzilla catches him.
- Spider-Man remarks that only a "couple weeks" have passed since the conclusion of the Secret Wars (1984-1985) event; however, a text box at the end of the comic also references events from Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 1) #300, a 1988 issue. Spider-Man also suggests that Godzilla hasn't appeared since he "tangled with the Hulk", which a textbox notes as a callback to Godzilla vs. Hulk, although the two never came to blows in that issue. It should be noted that Godzilla vs. Marvel issues are not set in the main Marvel continuity of Earth-616, and thus events which also took place in that continuity could be rearranged in this one.
- Variant Cover artist Greg Land previously illustrated Godzilla for Fantastic Four (vol. 7) #25's Godzilla Variant Cover, though he used the KingGoji design instead of a Heisei-inspired one.
- As with Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four, the Versus Variant cover, mimicking a boxing poster, features the tagline "One will fall", which is shared with Godzilla vs. Kong.
- A Venom-fused Godzilla previously appeared on a Godzilla Variant Cover for Venom (vol. 5) #37, illustrated by Dave Wachter.
- Godzilla's weight is given in the issue as 80,000 tons; this would make him one of the heaviest incarnations of the character, behind only the Monsterverse Godzilla, 2016 Godzilla, and the fully-grown Godzilla Earth.
- The Monster Homage Variant Cover by Nick Bradshaw is based on the cover of Where Monsters Dwell #22, depicting Godzilla in place of the robot monster Elektro.
