The old Mothra may be dead, but a new Mothra has arrived! After rescuing a Mothra egg from the Cretaceous period, Mira and Emi arrived back in the present…or, actually, back at Mothra’s original fight against Antra. And worse—they brought Meganulon with them! Is it possible that their actions in the past are what led to Mothra’s original death?!
Whatever the case may be, Mira and Emi now have a baby Mothra larva that they have to train to one day prevail against Antra and the monstrous Meganulon…or else this dystopian world of their own making will never be undone.[1]

Plot
Emi hangs a facsimile Megaguirus from a tree branch as Mira explains to Mothra Gemini that it represents their enemy. She shoots the construct in the head on command, to Emi's delight, but Mira is skeptical that an opponent who can't fight back is really preparing her for another fight, and wonders how they would get her to grow into an imago. Mothra Gemini notices the real Megaguirus and her swarm in the distance, and leads the twins to a farmhouse. Meganula descend, feeding on livestock and corn. As Megaguirus notices them, they hid in an aging barn. Mira convinces Emi to sing a song with her to travel back to the present and consult the Shobijin; they and Mothra Gemini plunge through a portal just in time. They find themselves in a thorny forest and try to be optimistic—until they reach a clearing and see the ruins of a futuristic city, where a MechaMothra is locked in battle with Keizer Ghidorah, Desghidorah, and King Ghidorah. Similar single-headed dragons swarm overhead.
Ghostly versions of the Shobijin find them and usher them into a cave, where the Handmaidens of Antra lay dying. The Shobijin explain that in their time, Antra is already dead, and her priestesses will soon join her. As the Ghidorah army overwhelms MechaMothra, they add that the Earth created Antra to defend against Megaguirus's arrival in the modern age, but she went berserk with fear. Antra's handmaidens blame themselves for failing to understand and comfort her. Like the Shobijin with Mothra, they do not actually control Antra, but ideally work in harmony with her. Their failure lies in their inability to properly communicate with Antra or each other, which Emi and Mira find all too relatable. They apologize for deceiving the humans, as the situation is now so dire that they have no real choice but to continue their work with Mothra Gemini.
As the combined rays of the Ghidorahs annihilate MechaMothra, Emi and Mira fall to arguing again. When Emi comments that they may not be able to harmonize because they don't know each other as well anymore, Mira retorts that they were only separated for years because she gave up looking for her. Emi asks her to try the song again; she refuses at first, worried they'll end up in an even more nightmarish time, and sarcastically suggests they make up a new song that will do whatever they want. The Shobijin offer to help with the "Haora Mothra" song to return them to the present.
Emi, Mira, and Mothra Gemini exit the time portal right next to Mira's skull-house. They find the Shobijin bedridden with the Handmaidens of Antra watching over them. The fairies reassure them that they will heal when Mothra Gemini becomes stronger, at which she begins spinning a cocoon. Emi is ecstatic, while Mira wonders if she'll become an imago in time. At that, Emi picks up Mira's idea to write their own song to speed Mothra's transformation and bring them back into harmony. Mira doesn't take her seriously at first, quipping that their dad managed to create things with his coworkers despite hating them all, but Emi wins her over. The Shobijin watch with small smiles as the sisters brainstorm lyrics and melodies. When they perform the finished song, however, it also reaches a slumbering Megaguirus and her swarm. The dragonflies take flight.
Emi frets that Mothra Gemini didn't like their song, but Mira, sunbathing, encourages her to be patient. Just then, a claw pokes out of the cocoon, followed by the rest of the resplendent imago Mothra Gemini. Emi and Mira rush to meet her as the recovering Shobijin get to their feet. Picking up the two pairs of fairies, the sisters ask Antra's handmaidens to summon her to give Mothra Gemini a sparring partner before she faces Megaguirus.

Trivia
- The concept of a "MechaMothra" was first proposed for a direct sequel to Godzilla vs. Mothra. Its only other appearance was as a joke form of Mothra Leo in a comic strip from the Outrageous Flying Mothra! paperback.
- This is the second IDW Publishing comic to feature a mechanical Mothra, as the Pink Mothra Kaiju Zord was introduced in IDW and BOOM! Studios' Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II less than a year prior.
- This issue marks Desghidorah's first appearance in an American comic. His meeting of Keizer Ghidorah is also the first time that the latter has ever met another Ghidorah in a story.
- The single-headed Ghidorah-like dragons resemble the Showa King Ghidorah, albeit with one head instead of three while also boasting an extra digit on their wings.
