Yasuko Sawaguchi

Yasuko Sawaguchi (沢口靖子 Sawaguchi Yasuko) is a Japanese actress. In 1984 at the the age of 18, Sawaguchi became the first winner of the Toho Cinderella Audition, and subsequently made her film debut in Karate Cop III: Song of the Sea. That same year she was selected as the female lead Naoko Okumura in the 30th anniversary revival of the Godzilla series, The Return of Godzilla, a role for which she won "Newcomer of the Year" at the 9th Japan Academy Awards. Sawaguchi also experienced a career as a singer in the 1980's and performed the tie-in song "Goodbye Lover" for the aforementioned film. While she continued to appear in films over the ensuing years, Sawaguchi became a prominent actress on television and continues to appear in Japanese television dramas to this day. Outside of her live-action roles, Sawaguchi is best known for her voice role as Chihiro's mother in Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away.
