Yatsuashi (ヤツアシ,   Yatsuashi) is an octopus kaiju that first appeared in the 2021 3Y Co. Ltd short film Yatsuashi.

Name

Yatsuashi's name potentially stems from yatsuhashi, a Japanese dish made of rice flour, cinnamon, and sugar.

Development

Yatsuashi was based on Dagora, the titular octopus kaiju of the unmade pre-1964 Daiei film Great Demon Beast Dagora.[1][2] Yatsuashi was primarily portrayed by a live octopus.

Design

Yatsuashi is a giant octopus. Its head and mantle are mostly green and covered in darker lines and lighter spots, while the green coloration steadily gets darker and browner as it goes down its tentacles, eventually becoming red. The undersides of Yatsuashi's tentacles are red and lined with two rows of white suckers. Its eyes are yellow.

Personality

Yatsuashi immediately went on a destructive rampage through Tokyo upon making landfall, making a beeline for the workplace of Teruki Nakano and destroying all in its path. Yatsuashi terrorized Nakano's coworkers, killing them and his superiors one by one in brutal fashion. Despite Yatsuashi's rage, the kaiju spared two of Nakano's coworkers who had been nice to him and let one who hadn't escape, while a news broadcast later showed that Yatsuashi caused no other fatalities. After Yatsuashi transformed back into Nakano, an octopus appeared with him, embracing his body.

Origins

Yatsuashi was created from the pain of Teruki Nakano, who had been overworked, humiliated, mocked, and berated by his coworkers. Nakano took to motionlessly staring out into the Pacific Ocean at sunset as a coping mechanism, eventually wading out into the sea with his work clothes on. Three days later, Yatsuashi emerged from the sea and rampaged through Tokyo, interrupting a meeting at Nakano's employment and killing only his boss, most of the coworkers who insulted him, and the company president. Yatsuasi then returned to the sea, where it transformed back into Nakano, leaving a regularly-sized octopus embracing his unconscious body.

Abilities

Tentacles

Yatsuashi used its tentacles to climb over and damage highways and buildings. It used them to reach into buildings to terrorize and kill people.

Amphibiousness

Yatsuashi rose out of a river and crawled onto land, where it was able to remain for long periods of time.

Salinity tolerance

Though cephalopods are poorly adapted to freshwater environments, Yatsuashi was unharmed by swimming in a river.

Ink

Yatsuashi can dispense ink from its tentacles.

Transformation

Yatsuashi can transform back into Teruki Nakano, shrinking and coalescing with green light before disappearing and leaving the naked human behind.
