The Giant Rats (大ネズミ,   Ōnezumi) are rat kaiju that first appeared in the 1969 Toho film Latitude Zero.

The Giant Rats were creations of Malic he set loose on his island base of Blood Rock to destroy Craig McKenzie and his crew. The Giant Rats chased the men through a cave and out to an acidic river. The men were able to kill one rat with a glove-mounted flamethrower, while the others met their end by jumping into the river in an attempt to follow their prey to the other side.

Development

The Giant Rats were modeled by Nori Maezawa and Akira Takahashi of Equis Productions. The suits were worn by Haruo Nakajima, Teruo Aragaki, Haruyoshi Nakamura, and others.

Design

The Giant Rats simply look like gigantic, dark, sewer rats. They have seemingly stubbier snouts than normal rats. Their eyes are bright yellow with red pupils.

Origins

The Giant Rats were originally normal rats living on Blood Rock, until Malic enhanced them with his growth serum.

History

Latitude Zero

The Giant Rats acted as Malic's underground guard dogs, protecting their master's hideout. The rats were put to the test after the crew of Alpha stumbled upon the cave to Malic's laboratory. The rats slowly approached the group before being shot at, continuing onward without a scratch. As the Giant Rats continued to make their way to the Alpha crew, they were fended off for a short while before McKenzie utilized his glove-mounted flamethrower, which set fire to one of the rats. To kill the rest, the crew flew over an acid pool with their elevation belts. Not realizing the danger, the Giant Rats chased after them, but were too focused to notice the acid. With their heads looking into the sky, the rats fell straight into the pit and slowly melted alive.

Abilities

Physical abilities

While not having any special abilities, the Giant Rats proved to be relatively fast crawlers, catching up with the Alpha crew after they escaped the cave the rats were in. After watching the Alpha crew fly over the acid river, the Giant Rats jumped into it.

Durability

The Giant Rats were merely annoyed by the gunfire and explosions from the Alpha crew's glove-mounted weapons.

Weaknesses

One of the Giant Rats proved vulnerable to the glove-mounted flamethrowers used by the Alpha's crew, while the remaining rats would succumbed to Blood Rock's rivers of acid.

Books
