The Diplodocus (ディプロドクス,   Dipurodokusu) is an extinct genus of sauropod dinosaur that appeared in the 1978 Godzilla episode "The Time Dragons."

Name

Diplodocus was described by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1878, who combined the Greek words διπλός, meaning "double" and δοκός, meaning "beam," referring to the animal's then-unique double-beamed chevron bones.

Design

The Hanna-Barbera Diplodocus shares little similarities to the real animal. It is a generic sauropod with a relatively short tail and a long, serpentine neck topped with a crocodile-like head. It joins contemporary depictions of sauropods as slow, water-dwelling, sprawling, tail-dragging animals capable of raising their heads up like snakes. The Diplodocus's body is brown with tan countershading on its underside, and it has yellow eyes which occasionally lack pupils. Due to Diplodocus being portrayed as a carnivore, its mouth is full of small, sharp teeth.

History

Godzilla

"The Time Dragons"

The time-displaced Calico crew came across a beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, from which a Diplodocus emerged. Quinn noted that Diplodocus ate whatever it could find, and Majors ordered the rest of the crew to flee. The Diplodocus noticed them and clambered onto land to give chase. It quickly cut off the crew and focused on Pete, but Godzooky flew in the dinosaur's face to distract it. As the rest of the crew took shelter, Majors pressed the Godzilla Signal to alert Godzilla. The Diplodocus nearly discovered the hiding Pete and Quinn, but was distracted by Godzilla's approach. The larger monster roared at the creature, which began snapping and backing away, before the King of the Monsters finally chased the Diplodocus off by breathing fire, frightening it back into the sea.

Abilities

Amphibiousness

In Godzilla, the Diplodocus was able to quickly swim in the ocean. It was also capable of walking on land.

Salinity tolerance

The Diplodocus was able to spend extended periods of time in the salty Atlantic Ocean, which its real-world counterpart was incapable of doing.

Weaknesses

While fast in the sea, the Godzilla Diplodocus was considerably slower on land. The Diplodocus also proved to be easily distracted, even when hunting its prey. Godzilla successfully intimidated it with his roars and fire breath. In The Kong Crew, Kurt Conrad easily blew up a Diplodocus with a bazooka.

Comics

The Kong Crew

Sergeant Kurt Conrad's troops gifted him a bazooka for his birthday. Overjoyed, Conrad quickly tested it on a nearby Diplodocus, blowing it to pieces as his men celebrated.

Trivia

  • In real life, Diplodocus was actually an herbivore that lived on land rather than in the ocean. Diplodocus lived from 154 to 152 million years ago during the Late Jurassic Period and, at up to 25 meters in length, was one of the longest land animals to ever walk the Earth.
