I probably like Godzilla and monster films in general too much for my own good... but I don't care.

I also have autism which isn't something I like to tell people since it gets negative reactions but I feel more comfortable saying it here due to the anonymity and the fact people seem to less aggressive towards that kind of stuff on this website.

Disclaimer: Some of the stuff on this page was written a while ago and hasn't been updated yet.

Becoming a big monster fan

For as long as I can remember I've always been interested in animals, dinosaurs and monsters. I think I started to become interested in Godzilla in my last year of primary school as something that grew out of my interest in dinosaurs and monsters. I think it's around this time I created my first big monster project called The City Destroyers. Unimaginative title I know but I never ended up finishing it. If you're wondering what it was about: A character called the Time Master summons monsters to destroy humanity with each monster being allocated a certain country/city/area to destroy.

Eventually I started to gradually look up more stuff related to the Godzilla franchise and watched the 2014 film in my uncle's cinema room (well, it's a room with a sofa and a big TV so close enough). Around this time, King of the Monsters was released in cinemas which was great timing! The rest is history.

As a side note: I don't remember when I found Wikizilla but I remember it having the KOTM style so somewhere around 2019 to 2021. It was only in early 2023 that I actually made an account though.

Ranking all the Godzilla films (I'd like to rewatch all of them in a marathon at some point)

Ranking incarnations of certain kaiju (will probably redo at some point to include more incarnations)

King Ghidorah

1. Monsterverse KG - This is my favourite King Ghidorah due to his amazing design, evil personality and the fact I consider him to be the only one who's genuinely terrifying (KG is meant to be an alien dragon who destroys planets for fun after all).

2. Showa KG - Great design and an evil personality but he's not scary despite characters mentioning him destroying Venus simply because he could.

3. Heisei KG - A good design (but also an incredibly overused one) though sadly he lacks any type of personality or menace due to being under the control of the Futurians most of the time (Showa at least had one film where he wasn't under mind control). His origin story is also disappointing compared to most other KGs. Mecha KG is pretty cool though.

4. GMK KG - Good design but his personality as a good guy is extremely mediocre and doesn't fit King Ghidorah at all. He also spends most of his time getting absolutely destroyed by Godzilla even after getting powered up and has an origin story more suited to Rodan or some other flying kaiju.

5. Anime KG - A good concept but an absolutely terrible execution considering that he looks like three strands of spaghetti, barely engages in a fight scene and gets destroyed easily by Godzilla once Metphies gets his weird eye thing poked out. A pity really, KG could've worked well as an eldritch horror and he seemed to have a somewhat evil personality.

Notes: ROM3 KG isn't here since I haven't seen ROM3 but from what I've seen he'd probably be 3rd on the list if I included him.

Mechagodzilla

1. Showa MG - This is my favourite Mechagodzilla due to his awesome design, varied arsenal of weapons (I especially love the way he can shoot missiles out of nearly any part of his body) and evil "personality". He also appears alongside Titanosaurus so that's a pro.

2. Monsterverse MG - Another Mechagodzilla with a great design (the claws are original and allow him to more physically than any other MG so far), cool weapons and another evil "personality". He also appears in one of my favourite Godzilla films.

3. Kiryu - A good design, cool arsenal of weapons and the idea of Godzilla's skeleton being used for an MG improve this MG but he's very overrated and looks weird without the back units.

4. RPO MG - I haven't actually seen the scene with this MG but I have seen Wikizilla's kaiju profile so that's enough. Anyway: alright design and alright weapons make this Mechagodzilla nothing special but far from terrible.

5. Heisei MG - A bad Mechagodzilla due to his goofy design and use of beam-spamming which makes him plain boring. At least he appeared in his film (which isn't bad) which is more than can be said for the last MG on this list.

6. Anime MG - An indescribably awful incarnation which barely counts as a Mechagodzilla in my eyes. Terrible design with a Millennium Falcon-like head, unseen abilities which just seem plain stupid and a terrible execution of a somewhat interesting idea. Not to mention the fact that he doesn't even show up in his own film outside of being a bland city.

Notes: For more detail, I've also made comments for the pages of each individual Mechagodzilla (though that was a while ago so some of it may be a little outdated)

My Chibi Godzilla Raids Again review:

Pros:

  • A varied cast of characters - my favourites are probably Chibi Godzilla, Chibi Mechagodzilla, Chibi Ghidorah, Chibi Anguirus and Chibi Gigan
  • Tons of references to the entire franchise
  • The humour is actually pretty good
  • Chibi Godzilla himself
  • The art style is nice, including the character design (don't say "they look nothing like the characters", the Chibi monsters aren't direct incarnations and are just related characters)
  • Not too many episodes but not too few either (obviously this could change). They're also all pretty short and easy to watch
  • I like the way they did Godzilla in this show by having him be the dad of Chibi Godzilla and Chibi Minilla and just randomly apppear in the background every once in a while

Cons:

  • I'd be lying if I said all the episodes are equal in quality - they can be a little hit-or-miss but they're never really bad
  • Some characters get side-lined too much - Chibi Anguirus is probably the worst example of this imo

Overall: 4.25/5 - very good

My Godzilla (Game Boy) review (American/European version, accessed via RetroGames):

Pros:

  • For what they are, the sprites are alright. The detailed sprites showing each monster are especially nice but you don't come across them very often (seems to be only before specific levels).
  • Completing a puzzle is admittedly pretty satisfying.
  • The controls are smooth and it's easy to control.
  • Nice to be able to access the map simply by going to the pause screen, even if where Minilla is hidden is random as far as I'm aware.

Cons:

  • If you do a puzzle wrong, your only option is to die and lose a life. Annoying, especially if it's because you got spammed by enemies rather than actually making a mistake.
  • Hedorah and Rodan are very annoying enemies to deal with, especially Hedorah. Not hard, just annoying (couldn't they have made Hedorah just take more punches to kill or at least have less knockback resistance?)
  • The soundtrack is irritating. I usually love video game soundtracks from all eras but this does not do it for me.
  • Very nitpicky but why are half of the enemies monsters who are typically Godzilla's allies in contemporary media?
  • Has very little in common with other Godzilla media - the monsters aren't giant, Godzilla has none of his usual abilities, etc. It's just a random kids game with the name Godzilla slapped onto it. (I get the original Japanese version is based on a children's manga somewhat more faithful to the franchise but this version takes out all reference to it so it doesn't have that excuse.)
  • Not really a criticism of the game itself but the box art for the American and European versions of the game are practically clickbait. Maybe not unusual back then but still.
  • Very repetitive - every level I've encountered is just destroying rocks yet again and it gets boring fast.

Overall: 1.5/5 - bad. Why did they do an official translated version of this but not the other Godzilla Game Boy game, Godzilla: Great Monster Battle or Godzilla: Giant Monster March?

My Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters review (accessed via RetroGames):

Pros:

  • The sprites are pretty good.
  • There's a decent variety of military vehicles for the player to use. Unfortunately, it doesn't mean much to me since I personally have little to no interest in the military but it should appeal to some people.
  • The soundtrack's not too bad and you can turn it off if you want to (though that also removes all the sound effects).
  • Various different maps and scenarios to choose (though the two I played were pretty similar).
  • As other people have said, the win screen is funny.

Cons:

  • The fighting system sucks. It's entirely down to chance whether or not you'll land a blow on the kaiju and I'm not a fan of that kind of gameplay at all. Not to mention how incredibly boring it quickly becomes.
  • The kaiju are virtually impossible to defeat - they have loads of health/durability, the fighting system means you're unlikely to deal any damage anyway and they can regenerate.
  • Nitpicky but I feel they could've added a couple of other kaiju to this game e.g. Mechagodzilla, Gigan or Anguirus - Jet Jaguar as a playable human invention would have been fun too. The selection of kaiju is a little small, especially considering there's 12 missions.
  • Who wants to just play as the military in a Godzilla game? Playing as the kaiju is way more fun imo (though games where you can choose either are good).
  • Not even a sequel to the other NES game. You know what the AVGN had to say about this.
  • Just generally repetitive and dull. There's barely any variety in how the monsters fight the player and I ended up getting so bored in the first mission I let the kaiju win.

Overall: 1/5 - terrible. Good concept and monster cast ruined by bad gameplay.

Good music

Godzilla

Terraria

  • Boss 1, Boss 2, Boss 3, Deerclops, Plantera, Duke Fishron, Empress of Light, Golem/Lunatic Cultist, Moon Lord
  • Goblin Army, Old One's Army, Solar Eclipse, Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon (best Christmas music ever!)
  • Corruption (I find it oddly relaxing), Day, Jungle, Ocean, Underground Desert

Others

  • Minecraft sounds (other than cave sounds, that shit creepy)
  • Angry Birds theme (Nostalgia to the MAX!)
  • All Hollow Knight boss themes - particularly False Knight, Nightmare King, Radiance
  • All Dead Cells boss themes - particularly Guardian's Haven, Keep Off The Flowers and (spoilers) Time For Your "Medicine"
  • All Undertale boss themes
  • All Deltarune boss themes

Hardest video game bosses I've ever beaten (I haven't played many hard video games)

  • Absolute Radiance from Hollow Knight (she took me 207 tries to defeat!)
  • Nightmare King Grimm from Hollow Knight
  • Thunderblight Ganon from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (took me a lot of tries and at least two tutorials to even attempt the boss)
  • Moon Lord (normal mode since I've never beaten him on a higher difficulty) from Terraria
  • Duke Fishron (expert mode) from Terraria

Most annoying video game enemy per game (in my opinion)

Disclaimer: I will not be including bosses in this section.

  • Monster's Fair: Hedorah. Appears in two of the three types of stages and the constant projectiles are a pain to avoid.
  • Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!: Horseshoes. If you've played this game, you know why. I'm not even sure what they're actually meant to be.
  • Godzilla (Game Boy): Hedorah. Impossible to kill and takes virtually no knockback.
  • Minecraft: Skeletons. Unpopular opinion I know but getting spammed by these things from a distance annoys me way more than a creeper blowing up next to me.
  • Terraria: There's quite a bit of competition here. Spiked Ice Slimes/Spiked Jungle Slimes (only on expert and above), Giant Tortoises/Ice Tortoises, Herplings, Ichor Stickers, Wyverns, Ice Golems and Pirate Captains are all noteworthy. Clowns, Headless Horsemen and basically anything from the Lunar Events also deserve "honourable" mentions.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Lizalfos. They're not particularly strong and don't have too much health but they're fast, have tons of methods of attacking and often have pretty nasty weapons. They're also pretty much everywhere in some way, shape or form.
  • Hollow Knight: Again, quite a bit of competition so I'll mention a few enemies. Oomas, Sporgs, Belflies, Flukemungas, Stalking Devouts, Primal Aspids and Grimmkin Novices/Grimmkin Masters/Grimmkin Nightmares are all noteworthy.
  • Dead Cells: There's A LOT of competition here. Inquisitors, Protectors, Festering Zombies, Impalers, Catchers, Slashers, Maskers, Golems, Guardian Knights, Slammers, Ground Shakers, Gold Gorgers, Mimics, Banished, Giant Ticks and Cold Blooded Guardians are all noteworthy.

Random observations

Am I the only one who thinks that Plantera from Terraria is really similar to Biollante? They both start out as rose/flower things and then evolve into plant beasts with mouths full of sharp teeth and they even both have vines with mouths? Just a thought.

If you changed the posture and removed the foot claw, in addition to some other small changes, the Jurassic Park Velociraptor design could make a good "lizard-man" design.

I'm surprised that a Loch Ness Monster vs. Bigfoot or a Loch Ness Monster vs. Yeti film has never been made, considering the fame of these cryptids.

Everyone is here - battles (wheel is still a work in progress and probably will be for a long time)

Example: Brain of Cthulhu vs. T. Rex (Jurassic Park)

1.

My honest ranking of the Godzilla designs

1. ShodaiGoji. The original and the best. Can be used both in a menacing way and a goofy way (it kind of depends on the angle). Perfection.

2. FinalGoji. The agile one. I'm mixed on the film but there's something about this design I really like. My only problem is that I wish the dorsal plates were slightly bigger. (also how has this one not been used in a fighting game yet?)

3. GyuraGoji. I'm not the only one who likes this design but I'm probably one of the few who likes it for reasons other than the thighs. The tail and weird head help make him look like something from another dimension. Also, I'm only talking about Ultima, I don't particularly care for the other forms.

4. MinusGoji. Almost a perfect design - the dorsal fins, the menacing head, most of it. I just don't like the arms very much - they look awkward in quite a few shots.

5. BioGoji to DesuGoji. They're all pretty much the same in my eyes. Anyway, this IS Godzilla. It just doesn't reach certain other designs for me (and is honestly overused).

6. GareGoji, DougheGoji and EvoGoji/RedSkyGoji. I like them all equally. The first Godzilla I saw (I think) and just generally good designs.

7. MireGoji/GiraGoji. I like the jagged dorsal fins on this one. Mixed on the colours though.

8. KingGoji. I like the head and the body but I can certainly see why others don't.

9. ShinGoji. He's weird and deformed and I like that, it suits the film well. Probably wouldn't work well outside of the film though.

10. MosuGoji. A good design and a classic but there's something almost forgettable about him. Still good though.

11. AniGoji. You already know what I think of the Anime Trilogy but anyway - it's a pretty alright design and works well for Godzilla Earth, even if it is essentially a slightly altered GareGoji.

12. GMKGoji. He's pretty good.

13. KiryuGoji. Mostly good but the face looks really goofy in some shots.

14. GyakushuGoji. Okay but whether he looks menacing or plain stupid varies from frame to frame.

15. DaisensoGoji. I can see what they were trying to do but it just doesn't really work for me. I wouldn't call it bad but I wouldn't call it good either.

16. MegaroGoji. Overrated.

17. SoshingekiGoji. He exists I guess? Most forgettable film design in my opinion.

18. 84Goji. They tried but it just looks weird in a lot of shots.

19. RexGoji. I don't particularly like the head design and it's really wrinkly for some reason. Good short films though.

20. GTS Godzilla. The GTS Godzilla seems to be a good incarnation (especially compared to his father) but I just don't think the design works for Godzilla. It would be a really good design if it was used for Zilla though.

21. Hanna-Barbera Godzilla. I can see the appeal but it's too cartoony (because of the art style it was used in) for me.

22. MusukoGoji. Ugly. Not much more to say.

23. ToraGoji. You already know what I think of this one so I won't say it again.

I know this list may be a bit contradictory at points but I find it difficult to explain why I like a certain design but not another at times. I would say I like all of them to at least some degree (outside of the bottom two).
