The Precambrian began from the formation of the Earth around 4,600 million years ago (Mya) and lasted until 538.8 ± 0.6 Mya.
In the real world
- The Precambrian supereon nears its end with the Ediacaran Period (635–538.8 Mya). The first complex multicellular organisms widely accepted as such arise in this time. The end of the Ediacaran through the beginning of the Cambrian Period sees the Cambrian explosion, during which most major animal phyla appear.
In fiction
- A species of crustacean that lived in colonies on the ocean floor exists at around this time. In approximately 539 million years, one of these colonies would become Destoroyah. Around 538,800,000 million years ago is the latest time that this could be taking place, due to Destoroyah's status as a Precambrian creature. (Godzilla vs. Destoroyah)
