The Kong Crew
"Manhattan Jungle"
In 1947, Virgil Price was a pilot in the United States Air Force, and was stationed at the Fort Hancock air base in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. One day, After his pet Dacschund Spit once again ate some mystery garbage, Virgil spent the night at the local veterinarian's office, waiting for his beloved dog. In the morning, he raced back to the base in his antique roadster. Luckily for Virgil, he found the base'a gates blocked by protestors, who had gathered in response to alleged sightings of a bomber flying over the Manhattan Jungle the day before. The Military Police at the gates dispersed the crowd and two women admired Spit as they left, briefly misleading Virgil into believing they were talking about him. The others soldiers poked fun at him for this, and gave him the nickname "virgin."
In a briefing with Colonel Pearl, Virgil and the other pilots were informed that the plane that had been seen entering the jungle were the biologist Jonas Parker and journalist Irvin Stone. Given that the jungle had been strictly quarantined for the last fifteen years, it was the "Kong Crew"'s mission to fly over the island and locate the two for extraction without entering the jungle itself. When the meeting dismissed, a nurse entered the room to deliver the Colonel's medicine. Virgil and his teammate Bradley Turner admired her as she left, and the Colonel revealed that she was his daughter Betty, and assigned the two as a pair for the flyover.
Outside, Price made his way to his plane, while reminding Spit that the vet had placed him on a strict diet. Price did not see his P51 on the runway, and asked his friend Andrew, the plane's mechanic, about this. He revealed that it was inoperable and recieving engine work, forcing Virgil to instead fly an old P21 that they had restored for the recent Independence Day celebrations. Virgil was aghast at having to fly such an antique, but Betty, who was nearby admired the little plane, and wished she could take it out. She and Virgil talked a bit about her also being a pilot, and he left Spit in her care while he went on the mission.
On the way over, Virgil lagged well behind the other three pilots. Bradley insisted they take a peek through the jungle, despite Virgil's hesitance and the colonel's orders. As they flew, they suddenly found themselves being tracked by a gigantic pterosaur. The others were fadt enough to escape it and get above the buildings where it was safer, but Virgil had to rely on his wits. At the flatiron building with the beast still on his tail, Virgil dove to the right hoping to lose it. But just after choosing a side, a giant hairy hand swiped out at his plane, clipping his tail and sending Virgil crashing towards the street.
