History

The project was originally pitched by Yoshimoto Yonetani in 2006 as a 24 episode series. The series would have included not only Showa era kaiju, but scrapped ones such as Garasharp and Marukobukarappa, as well as the "Mechanical Gamera corps". The series' theme song would have been called Shambhalaya (tba) (シャンバラヤ牙滅羅!,   Shanbaraya (tba)). Ultimately, the series was scrapped.[1]

Trivia

  • Zigra's design, ability to swim at extreme speeds, and usage of projectile attacks in GAMERA -Rebirth- may have been inspired by Betterman Aqua from the 1999 Sunrise anime series also directed by Yonetani, Betterman, who in turn may have been inspired by Zigra's Showa era design.
  • In 2005, another animated Gamera television series was planned by Cartoon Network, being planned to release in 2007.[2] It was also scrapped.
  • The unnamed horned monster in one of the concept pieces bares a resemblance to the monsters Monga and Harinezura.
  • Yonnetani erroneously refers to Garasharp as a shelved monster in his tweet despite Garasharp being created for Gamera vs. Garasharp rather then a scrapped project.
