Hi Space Hunter, I’ve been going over the UK sections of the Godzilla films and was noticing the different runtimes on some of the VHS releases. Could it be something to do with PAL speed-up? I’m also aware of a few jumpcuts in the Monsters from an Unknown Planet VHS (not referring to the censored shots), although they seem to be intended rather than something caused by deterioration.

That is correct. The Godzilla films released on videogram in the UK were conventionally telecined at 25fps per the 576-line standard used in the region. As such, they run approximately 4% faster. (To be pedantic, Godzilla 1985's VHS was merely a shitty standards conversion from NTSC to PAL, and there is no runtime difference compared to the North American and Japanese tape releases of that particular title).

Could you be more specific in your examples pertaining to Monsters from an Unknown Planet? I am aware of a few splices (or "joins", as you folks call them) present on the print used for the Derran video version.

I’m mainly using the Harley Thomas upload from the Internet Archive as reference, as I unfortunately do not own the tape myself. The first one I noticed is at the start, where the beginning of the GvMG flashback has the first few seconds missing on both the Archive version and the version of the credits uploaded onto YouTube. I’ll have to go back and make sure if any other “joins”.

After a quick watch, I’ve noticed three others, all happen around the time that Mafune’s backstory is told. The first is with the picture flashback, you can tell with the audio: “Still in his early th- an interest.” The second is just after the flashback ends. The third is when Ichinose asks where Mafune lives.

That's all at the beginning of reel 2, so a little damage and jettisoned frames around the head of a reel makes sense.

So I take it that the missing seconds from the GvMG recap are also caused by reel damage?

On another note, I know you’ve removed the VHS runtimes from the infoboxes, fair enough given your explanation. Although I was wondering if it was worth mentioning on each films’ respective UK release section? Maybe it’s a bit unnecessary, but I figured it would be a neat bit of information for people unfamiliar with the process. Especially since it’s a bit back and forth as Hokushin’s Cosmic Monster VHS lists it with the U.S. runtime and the Manga releases for King Ghidorah and vs. Mothra lists them with the uncut runtimes, (are these other examples of that "shitty standards conversion" you mentioned?).

I don't think it's a necessary explication; this info can be inferred from the video release sections, and any relevant discrepancies in standards conversion or missing footage can be brought up there.

The Hokushin Cosmic Monster is, most likely, a regular PAL telecine, and the two Manga releases were uncut sans the Toho logos and Toho Eiga screens, and standard telecines as well.

I don't know if you have this knowledge or not but do you know what copies of Cosmic Monster have the Cinema Shares logo on them? I recently purchased two copies from UAV of both it, and Megalon from 1991 and the logo is intact on Megalon on both copies but not Cosmic, I also think one of them might be the NBC cut but anyways there's a copy I found on internet archive that has it in there but I could never verify the source? Do you know anything about this?

Howdy SpaceHunterM, noticed you’ve got some experience with the International versions of these films and was wondering if you could help me out. While searching for some posters for Godzilla vs. Gigan I stumbled on these two posters, both seem to be Toho International posters for Invasion of Astro-Monster and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Can you just make sure they’re legitimate before I upload them onto the galleries?

Here are the two posters:

They’re double-sided flyers — IIRC, chirashi (B5) sized. The obverse is the Toho International poster (or variation) and the verso has a synopsis, some credits, etc. The ‘60s films had synopses in French and Spanish, too.

My mistake, it looks like B3 is the primary size for these, although maybe not exclusively. These were eventually replaced by booklet format flyers: The Return of Godzilla, Gunhed, etc.

As always with posters, my advice (for what it's worth) is to note the size in the galleries here only if you're certain it was printed in that size.

I have a topic about poster sizes here; this is a good off-site reference for Japanese poster formats and sizes.

Nice little thread you made there The H-Man. Maybe I should make one about British posters, since I bet someone at some point will confuse an UK poster for one of these films as being an American one (despite older UK posters usually having either a U, A or X rating on them).

Pretty sure I saw a higher quality image of the verso side for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla once either by looking on images for a while or on a Toho Kingdom forum. Maybe I should go back and find it.

Side note: Does that English synopsis for GvMG say “A yong architect”? The beauty of Toho International.

So when I was looking through the page for Prophecies of Nostradamus I had noticed that you seemed to have added Matthew Oram’s dubbing company under the name “Voicetrax” as part of the Foreign releases section. Is that actually the name of Oram’s company or is that just speculation, if so where did you find it, was there any name found for Barry Haigh’s dubbing company? Hope this isn’t too much of a hassle, I’m thinking about making pages for some of the dubbing companies on here (e.g. Frontier, Atlas as well as maybe Oram and Haigh’s companies) since it’s such an interesting, important and mostly unknown part of these movies’ history, I want to help spread awareness of these dubbing companies if I can.

You and The H-Man never fail to surprise me with how much you know about the alternate versions of these movies.

We are in the process of reaching out to the Orams to confirm some specifics, but yes, broadly, Voicetrax was the dubbing company Matthew and Elizabeth operated from the mid-'70s to mid-'80s.
