This article is a list of legal actions that Toho has exerted on companies they believe have infringed on its rights to the Godzilla franchise. This list is organized by medium type and listed in chronological order.

Advertisements

  • In April 2008, Toho sued Subway, a fast food chain specializing in submarine sandwiches, alleging that a scene where a giant green reptilian monster attacks an Asian city in a TV commercial for the company's "Five Dollar Footlong" promotion infringed on their copyrights on Godzilla.[1] The monster would be replaced with a giant robot in later versions of the advertisement.

Films

  • Toho threatened to file a lawsuit against The Cannon Group, Inc. for the unrealized spoof film It Ate Cleveland, prompting the cancellation of the film after it was retitled Godzilla vs. Cleveland.[2][3]
  • Toho sued Voltage Pictures over their film Colossal, which was described by the filmmakers as a "cross between Godzilla and Being John Malkovich." Toho claimed that not only did the filmmakers frequently reference Godzilla when discussing their film, even calling it "a Godzilla film" in interviews, but they also blatantly used the design and characteristics of Godzilla in their marketing for the film.[4]

Video games

  • In 2011, Toho sent a cease and desist order to American mobile game developer Inert Soap, arguing that the imagery used in the icon and website for one of their games, Fingerzilla, made unauthorized use of Godzilla and could confuse players into thinking that the game was officially endorsed by Toho.[5][6]
  • In 2024, Toho sent DMCA takedown requests to various Roblox fan games that were using the Godzilla license without their permission, including Kaiju Universe.[7]

Miscellaneous

  • In 2002, Toho forced Adler Fels Winery of Napa Valley to dispose of an undisclosed amount of wine for using the Godzilla image without their permission.[8]
  • In 2014, Toho sued NOLA Brewing over their beer line "MechaHopzilla", which used a character that was very similar to Mechagodzilla.[9]

To sort

  • Toho sued U.S. rapper Pharoahe Monch for the unauthorized sampling of the opening notes of Akira Ifukube's "Godzilla's Theme" from Mothra vs. Godzilla on their song "Simon Says".[10]
  • Toho sent a cease and desist order to Marvel Comics after they included a robot Godzilla which too closely resembled the genuine article on the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #413, forcing them to change the front cover's artwork on all future reprints of the issue (see Comics above for a picture of the original cover).[11]
