Warrior of Love Rainbowman, often abbreviated to just Rainbowman, is a franchise based on the 1972-1973 television series created by Kohan Kawauchi and produced by Toho. The series was popular enough to spawn multiple comic adaptations, numerous toys and other tie-in merchandise, and eventually an animated reboot in 1982. Both series are generally remembered fondly by those who remember them airing, but the original series' legacy far outshines its animated counterpart, much of which is currently considered lost media.

It was followed up by Kawauchi and Toho's next venture, Warrior of Light Diamond Eye in 1973. In the mid 2000s, Rainbowman made a brief comeback with a pachinko machine from Sankyo adapting and updating the original series, and an audio play adaptation from Sound Theater.

Series history

Rainbowman is inspired by two of Kawauchi's earlier projects, Moonlight Mask and Seven Color Mask, which were refined and re-centered on Kawauchi's philosophies centered in various Buddhist, Taoist, Muslim, and Hindu teachings. The seven colors of the rainbow are assigned to seven elements in traditional Japanese "Gogyo," including both the five core elements and the two other elements which are variable between interpretations. It explores many themes including forgiveness, unconditional love, and the cycle of violence.
